Variant photos & shades
By default Tryvio picks one reference photo per product. Some products need more control than that — a colour that looks nothing like the product photo, or a makeup shade the AI should know about by name. Variant photos let you fix both, per colour or even per single variant, without touching Shopify.
Where to find it
Go to Products, open a product, and click Edit try-on to open the drawer. If the product has a colour/shade option (Colour, Shade, or similar) with more than one value, you’ll see a new Variant photos section — one row per colour. Products with only one variant don’t show this section; there’s nothing to choose between.
One row per colour
Each row shows the photo the AI is currently using for that colour, with a badge telling you where it came from:
- Shopify photo — the colour’s own image, synced from Shopify.
- Your pick — a photo you chose here.
- Product photo — no colour-specific image exists, so Tryvio falls back to the product’s main reference photo.
Click Change to open the same photo picker used for front/back reference photos and pick a different image from the product’s own photos.
Per-variant overrides
Some colours have several variants (e.g. sizes) that don’t all look the same in the same photo. Click Per variant… on a row to expand it and set a photo for one specific variant, like Black / M. A per-variant pick always wins over the colour-level pick for that one variant.
Click Reset on any row to remove a pick and go back to the automatic fallback.
More than 10 colours on a product? A Find a colour… filter box appears above the list so you can jump straight to the one you need.
Makeup: shade words
For makeup products, each colour row also gets four small text fields — the words Tryvio tells the AI about that shade. These words beat the photo: the generation model follows the text, so even a plain packshot can render close to the right colour once the words are filled in.

Leave a field empty if you don’t know it — nothing is required.

If you’ve set a swatch colour on the shade option in Shopify, Tryvio reads it as a fallback for #hex whenever you leave that field empty.
Saving
Everything in this section is a draft, exactly like the category and front/back photo pickers above it — nothing is saved until you click the page’s Save bar. Your picks and shade words are stored in Tryvio only. Nothing is written back to Shopify, and no new Shopify permission is ever needed for this.
How it decides which photo to use
When a shopper picks a variant on your storefront, Tryvio resolves the reference photo in this order:
- Your per-variant pick for that exact variant
- Your colour-level pick
- The variant’s own photo, synced from Shopify
- The product’s main photo
The storefront widget’s colour swatch thumbnails follow the same order, so shoppers see the same photo you picked before they even generate a try-on.
Picks are remembered by the photo’s position, not a copy of the file — if you later remove that photo in Shopify, the colour automatically falls back to its own Shopify photo instead of breaking.
